A Account of Surprising Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Floor
Back in 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured I would book lodging when I arrived, yet once I got there, a large conference was happening and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I considered the possibility of spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. With no idea quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking near a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend the evening in a place that stayed open 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the next day, but as a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.
Our society requires more folks with such compassion.
It seems I seemed out of place because a young woman saw me loitering in the city center and inquired whether I needed help. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she offered I was welcome to sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: a leftover filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. I had access to a hot shower and somewhere safe to rest to spend the night.
Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she took as a woman inviting a man she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I operated under a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I am astonished she did that – but still deeply appreciative.
I didn’t end up attending that university, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of kindness. I hope the universe has returned her generosity many times over. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
