A Heartbreaking Transformation Just One Year Has Brought in the US

In late October 2024, the environment was entirely separate. Before the national election, considerate Americans could acknowledge the country's deep flaws – its injustices and disparity – however they still could see it as America. A democratic nation. A country where constitutional order meant something. A state guided by a respectable and decent leader, notwithstanding his advanced age and increasing frailty.

Currently, this autumn, many of us hardly identify the nation we live in. Persons believed to be unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and pushed into transport, sometimes refused legal rights. The eastern section of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish event space. The leader is harassing his political rivals or alleged foes and requesting legal authorities transfer an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are dispatched to US urban areas under fabricated reasons. The Pentagon, relabeled the War Department, has practically freed itself of regular press examination as it spends possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Colleges, attorney offices, media outlets are yielding due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are treated like aristocracy.

“America, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the brink toward dictatorship and totalitarianism,” a noted author, commented recently. “Finally, swifter than I believed likely, it did happen in America.”

Each day begins with fresh terrors. It is challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – just how far gone we have become, and the rapid pace with which it has happened.

Nevertheless, we know that the president was legitimately chosen. Following his deeply disturbing initial presidency and following the warnings linked to the awareness of the rightwing blueprint – following the leader directly stated openly he planned to act as an autocrat solely at the start – enough Americans chose him over the other candidate.

As terrifying as the current reality is, it’s even scarier to recognize that we have only been nine months under this leadership. Where will an additional three years of this downfall leave us? And suppose the three years becomes an prolonged era, as there is nobody to limit this ruler from determining that another term is required, perhaps for national security reasons?

Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. There are midterm elections in 2026 that could create a new balance of power, in case Democrats recapture one or both houses of the legislature. There are public servants who are attempting to apply certain responsibility, for example representatives that are launching an investigation concerning the try to money grab from legal authorities.

And a leadership election in 2028 could start the path to recovery just as last year’s election placed us on this regrettable path.

There are numerous residents marching in the streets throughout communities, as they did recently during anti-authority protests.

Robert Reich, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the US is rising”, exactly as before after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or throughout the Vietnam war protests or throughout the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the listing ship finally returned to balance.

The author states he understands the signs of that revival and sees it happening at present. For proof, he references the recent massive protests, the broad, cross-party resistance against a broadcaster's firing and the largely united refusal by journalists to accept military mandates they only publish what is sanctioned.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists dormant until certain corruption grows too toxic, a particular deed so offensive of the common good, certain violence so disruptive, that he is compelled but to awaken.”

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will be validated.

In the meantime, the crucial issues persist: will the nation ever recover? Can it retrieve its standing globally and its commitment to the rule of law?

Or must we acknowledge that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My cynical mind indicates that the final scenario is accurate; that everything could be finished. My optimistic spirit, though, convinces me that we must try, through all methods we can.

For me, as a media critic, that involves pushing media professionals to adhere, more completely, to their duty of holding power to account. For others, it might involve engaging with election efforts, or planning demonstrations, or discovering methods to protect electoral access.

Less than a year ago, we existed in a separate situation. In the future? Or after another term? The truth is, we are uncertain. All we can do is try to not give up.
