'Living a Nightmare': Relatives of Missing Young People Desperately Seek Information After Alpine Inferno
The loved ones of teenagers unaccounted for after a deadly inferno at a bar in a Switzerland's ski resort are confronting an excruciating wait for answers and requesting information about their loved ones online.
The blaze ripped through the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of New Year's Day. Confirmed images reveal the ceiling being engulfed in flames as bottles with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Authorities have stated that it could take days if not weeks to formally name the fatalities of the disaster, which claimed the lives of 40 people and wounded another scores more. A spokesperson stated on the latest update that 113 of the injured have been identified, with the process still underway to locate the other six.
In the interim, loved ones have been using social media to request clues about their loved ones who were present at the venue that night.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The location of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are still unconfirmed, according to an appeal from his mother.
The who lives of a town near the city, explained to a publication that she had gone back to Lausanne to see if he was in the medical facility, while his other parent did the equivalent search in Bern, but was unsuccessful.
"This is a living nightmare, a nightmare. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. It's terrible," she stated.
She continued that some of his friends had been discovered with injuries covering nearly half their bodies. "There are no words; they experienced an absolute nightmare."
The Italy's foreign ministry has indicated that six of its citizens have not been located.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old sportsman, originally from Italy but now residing in Dubai.
The Italian Golf Federation has said that he is deceased, without mentioning the tragedy, paying tribute to a "talented young man who embodied passion and true sportsmanship."
His father, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around midnight. An official spokesperson has stated that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Additional Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is also unaccounted for. His parent said that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with a group and found himself at the bar.
"A companion told me they escaped after the fire started and that he had his phone with him, but then at a specific moment he lost sight of him," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his educators commented, "He was known for his good nature and smile, coupled with great responsibility. Often ask if help out."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Greek and Swiss nationality but lives full-time in the country, was also at the bar on that night, according to reports.
Her brother has published an urgent request online, saying the relatives has had "no updates" regarding the teenager or the group she was with, who are also reported missing.
Consular authorities from her other nation say they are actively engaged with the case.
